About the Sheehan & Giddens Suicidality Phenomena Definitions

The Sheehan and Giddens definitions were created to fix the issues present in the nomenclature systems of suicidality phenomena definitions currently available.  While critically reviewing the nomenclature system in the United States Food and Drug Administration’s 2012 draft guidance for industry on the assessment of suicidal ideation and behavior in clinical trials, Sheehan & Giddens realized there were a number of instances of suicidality that would not meet the current definitions (a type 1 error) and there were instances where the definitions were unintentionally over-inclusive (a type II error).  (For more information on this issue see chapter 12.2 of citation 2 in How to Cite the Sheehan & Giddens Suicidality Phenomena Definitions below and see Sheehan, D. V., Giddens, J. M., & Harnett-Sheehan, K. (2014). Current Assessment and Classification of Suicidal Phenomena using the FDA 2012 Draft Guidance Document on Suicide Assessment: A Critical Review. Innovations in clinical neuroscience, 11.)  They felt it was important for proper definitions of suicidality phenomena to be available which corrected the issues found in this and other nomenclature systems.

Crosswalks to Other Nomenclature Systems

The products listed below are crosswalks between the Sheehan & Giddens suicidality phenomena definitions and the other major nomenclature systems currently in use.  Each of the crosswalks contain the Sheehan & Giddens title and definition for a suicidality phenomenon, the title and definition used by the comparison nomenclature system, and an explanation of the differences between the titles or definitions for each system.  They provide examples to show how the definitions in the contrasting systems, do or do not accommodate real world patient experiences.

Mapping Tables to Assessment Scales and Structured Interviews

The products listed below are mapping tables that show how various assessment scales and structured interviews map to and captures the Sheehan & Giddens suicidality phenomena definitions.  Each of the mapping tables contain the Sheehan & Giddens title and how each scale or structured interview maps to or captures each of the suicidality phenomena.  Many of the mapping tables are also scoring forms to document whether each of the suicidality phenomena occurred and the intensity / seriousness of each, if it occurred.
