About the MINI for Suicidality Disorders StudiesA closeup of text on a white background

The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) for Suicidality Disorders Studies (MINI-SD)* is a short structured diagnostic interview that appends a series of modules for suicidality disorder phenotypes at the end of the standard MINI (for more information about these suicidality disorders phenotypes, click here).  This suicidality disorder module asks about the 12 different suicidality disorders phenotypes described by Sheehan & Giddens (in Suicidality: A Roadmap for Assessment and Treatment).  These suicidality disorder phenotypes may have a different age of onset, natural history, clinical course, set of biomarkers, prognosis, and response to treatment.

For more information about the MINI click here.

A closeup of text on a white backgroundHas the MINI been validated?

The MINI has been psychometrically validated against the much longer Structured Clinical Interview for DSM diagnoses (SCID-P) in English and French and against the Composite International Diagnostic Interview for ICD-10 (CIDI) in English, French, and Arabic. It has also been psychometrically validated against expert opinion in a large sample in four European countries (France, United Kingdom, Italy and Spain). The MINI has been linguistically validated in over 70 languages. According to researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) Division of Clinical and Treatment Research, the MINI is a fully validated and more time-efficient alternative to the SCID-P and CIDI.

The Suicidality Disorder modules in the MINI for Suicidality Disorders Studies have not yet been validated psychometrically since there is no other structured interview with comparable modules against which to validate it.

The MINI for Suicidality Disorders* is the MINI 7.0.2 for DSM-5 with additional modules added to map to diagnostic criteria for 12 separate suicidality disorder phenotypes. Each of these phenotypes has a different clinical presentation and each may have a different response to different treatments. These phenotypes are described in detail in the book Suicidality: A Roadmap for Assessment and Treatment by Sheehan DV and Giddens JM. Harm Research Press. Tampa, Florida, USA. 2015.

The MINI for Psychotic and Suicidality Disorders* is a more elaborate version of MINI 7.0.2 for DSM-5. The Psychotic Disorders Module in this MINI variant permits identification of all the key Psychotic Disorder subtypes. It has additional modules added to the standard MINI to map to diagnostic criteria for 12 separate suicidality disorder phenotypes.

The Adolescent MINI Kid for Suicidality Disorders Studies* (for ages 13 through 17) has a detailed set of questions / modules on each of the 12 Suicidality Disorders phenotypes.  It has more detailed modules on each of the Suicidality Disorder phenotypes beyond the questions assessing overall suicidality in the standard MINI Kid.  It is suitable for clinical and research settings where Suicidality Disorders phenotyping is a focus of interest and where it is important to differentiate between the different suicidality disorders phenotypes (e.g. Impulse Attack Suicidality Disorder vs. Psychotic Suicidality Disorder vs. Mood Disorder Induced Suicidality Disorder).  Otherwise all the other modules are similar to the standard MINI Kid.

Translations and Linguistic Validation of the MINI for Suicidality Disorders Studies

The non-profit Mapi Research Trust (MAPI) / ICON Language Services, in Lyon, France, is the sole translation service for existing non-English translations for all rating scales and diagnostic interviews that Dr. Sheehan licenses and distributes directly under a license from him.

Dr. Sheehan has collaborated closely with MAPI on these translations for over 15 years and continues to do so. This is to ensure the production of consistent and conceptually equivalent translations of the MINI and its variants and of Dr. Sheehan’s scales, and to be able to provide linguistic validation and certification of these translations. MAPI / Icon Language Services does not distribute the English source language version of the MINI for Suicidality Disorders Studies, which is available from Dr. Sheehan directly.

When Dr. Sheehan fully executes your license agreement request, he will provide you with the information to contact MAPI / Icon Language Services to obtain consistent and conceptually equivalent, and linguistically validated translations and the related certificates.

MAPI / Icon Language Services may charge its own usual fees for this work.
